We all think that good customer service is vital, but we have differing opinions when it comes to what actually constitutes this. We all want the service we receive to be polite, quick and high quality. Having worked in customer service jobs for over eight years, I can tell you that it is sometimes a stressful and thankless business. However, when you know that the way you treat your customers could be the difference between having enough tips to pay the bills, you do not think twice about how important customer service is. Believe me, you already know.
The first job I landed was at a Chinese restaurant. My best friend’s father was my boss. The first thing he asked me was; why is customer service important? I thought he asked me; why is cussing servants in Portland because of his Chinese accent. Luckily a huge party arrived before I had time to make up a reply. My friend told me what he had actually said and I thought it a silly question. However I soon learnt why it was so important. I only had to mess up a couple of orders to realise. Late delivery equalled irritated hungry patron, which equalled no tip for me.
Over the next several years I tried jobs in video stores, malls, and of course bars. You will not see a whole lot of tips coming your way of your customers are unhappy. When you work positions like these, you want and need the gratuity. It’s basically your pay check.
This is the same for big business as well, customer service is still the key to success. When you need to train your employees on the value of customer service, you can hire business speakers to impart their knowledge. Business speakers are effective because they have industry experience, and more than that, they have been extremely successful in business. They will also be quick to tell you that good customer service is paramount to increased sales. So you ask why is customer service important? It simply results in happy people and capital earned.
