When it comes to business change, there is one thing that is unlikely to change: the use of external staffing. External staffers can be and are used for a multitude of roles in business, but particularly during change initiatives. Some change projects, although they’re short term projects, may need skills that internal staffing can’t offer. This is where external staffing specializes. They work on a short term contract to help complete a project, usually for business change, and then they leave once they’ve done what they needed to do and the project is finished. Although external staffing may be raising eyebrows for some, it can very well be the trend of the future when it comes to business change.
There was a time when the business culture in America was such that a person would be employed by one company for the duration of their career. They would retire from service with a party and accept a token of appreciation from a company. There was a mutual expectation of loyalty from employers and employees. It wasn’t very impressive if your resume showed that you transferred from organization to organization. During the 1980’s, somehow, things changed. The expectation of loyalty died, the stigma started changing, and American business was reshaped.
The change in policy included a lot of downsizing and shifting is hard and the effect is much more pronounced in long time employees. Yet, the change also became a catalyst for America’s improved efficiency and productivity in the business world. It allows for faster redeployment of workers. These redeployments are not always voluntary, but the upshot is that movement from one company to the next is no longer stigmatized.
External staffing is of great importance to this transformation. There’s an increasing number of people who want a job in staffing firms as opposed to a full time position in a certain business. The people who make this choice find themselves in a position where they gain more money and they have a more challenging career. This also heralds the future of business change. Business change projects are much more complicated and risky than run the business. It takes a higher level of skill to manage change and most skillful workers are usually found in external staffing firms.
