• An option that many organizations are turning to in order to meet staffing needs for corporate change is to resort to staffing firms. With staffing firms, companies can get a person with the right kind of skills to fill a specific job position fast. While this can be an effective method for dealing with the staffing problem it has both benefits and some potentially serious pitfalls.

One of the pitfalls to employing a staffing firm for corporate change needs is that regular employees can be resentful toward temporary staffers. The regular employees may feel threatened and they may take an attitude of, “Who is this person to tell me how to do my job?” If used properly, though, these temporary staffers can provide a corporate change project with focus.

One reason why other companies don’t use staffing firms is that they could cost a fortune. What they don’t realize is that part of the cost is a matching fee. After all, finding and hiring an equivalent permanent staffer would also be expensive.

In employing a temporary staffer, the management is paying for a reduced risk. The temporary staffer is taking on a higher level of risk because their performance requirements are very high. Moreover, they can be replaced with ease. The employer is paying for that reduction in risk.

There are a couple of things that the management has the tendency to do that increase the costs of external staffing. One is to bring in external staffer to try to put out a fire. Situations like these are chaotic. This means the temporary staffer’s job will be harder and take longer, which drives up the final costs. The second thing that management does is to hire an employee with more than enough skills just to fill up a single need. This means that the job will be done exactly on time, but the extra skills demand an increased price. The best way to avoid this problem is for internal management to understand the skill requirements for the job and hire appropriately. This can reduce the costs for staffing and at the same time, get the job done.
