• There are times when a company, facing a slow bleed of market share, will recognize the need to adjust their strategy. The manner in which this corporate change is handled can vary dramatically from company to company. For some, an internal strategy team is assembled to research the causes of loss of market share. This can be a problematic scenario. It’s scary to even think of informing the bosses that the problem stems from their plans, especially if so many jobs could be on the line. When the internal strategy teams are not a feasible choice, an alternative course of action can be to use the services of a strategy development firm to structure the needed corporate change.

    Essentially, it is the job of strategy development firms to analyze the activities of the company. They can assess the products or services the corporation offers, the people to whom they are being marketed, and how they receive the products and services. After the analysis is done, the firm will come up with a new business strategy using all the info they’ve gathered. It may mean a corporate change wherein they’re making a few tweaks in the marketing or changing the policies regarding deliveries.

    One small example might be that a company is providing financial services but targeting mainly small businesses primarily that don’t have enough capital to retain these financial services. A strategy development firm might come back and advise that the marketing be adjusted to target companies making more than a million dollars a year.

    It should be noted, however, that strategy development firms are not typically experts in corporate change management. Their services center more on coming up with an overall strategy. The assessment they return may include two dozen steps that should be taken to achieve the strategy, but those steps could involve two dozen change initiatives that the strategy firm has not outlined. For those involved in corporate change, it’s a good idea to consult with higher management first about what the strategy firm is actually offering and not just wait for problems that might occur upon receipt of the final assessment.
