Bankruptcy filing can certainly be a disruption in your life but what would you do without it? Now consider that! There once was something called ‘debtors prison’. That phrase bubbled up from some junior or high school memory of London in the sixteen hundreds. Images of filthy streets, pock marked with excessive horse excrement, populated by beggars, the smell of death in the air. Debtors prison, in this country, thank goodness, is a thing of the past, a bad memory in human history but who is to say that somewhere it still doesn’t exist? But I digress. My point is that thank goodness the legal system has developed compassion and given people in dire financial straits an instrument of the law to protect and guide them. I know it’s a terrible position to be in but at least it offers you the opportunity to hold on to your seat rather than have everything you own be taken away, confiscated, you and your family thrown out on the street, or worse, put into debtor’s prison, the key thrown away, never again heard from or seen. Armed with this alternative perspective, how grateful are you now for being able to file for bankruptcy?
