There has been a recent tendency by Central Government and some large firmsto have large sets of staff Work From Home. Definitely there are advantages for everyone involved, including the environment. For example staff in certain Online Jobs, most likely work in small workspaces all day long with little or no individual interaction with suppliers, consumers or even co-workers. So why do they need to commute daily, wasting time and cash when they could Work From Home. It saves on fuel, wear and tear on their cars, and allows more time with family and friends. The bosses reduce real estate costs, utility costs and other costs coupled with having workers on the premises. And the environment wins too, as all those planes trains and automobiles are not required. There is less pollution and easier commutes for all and sundry that still have to get to work. Looks like an ideal arrangement, doesn’t it.
Well you can’t argue with the balance sheet. It certainly makes financial sense for all parties concerned. However there are some downsides. And to be explicit this doesn’t affect one and all. One of the intangible effects on people who Work From Home is the absence of social interaction. Yes possibly they do work in a cubicle all day, but at coffee breaks, natural breaks and lunchtimes, people meet and talk about all manner of things. It’s what people do, and they enjoy doing it.
The unstoppable rise of Internet Business and Online Jobs has changed the rules on working procedures. Technology has marshalled work through our front doors, and into our houses. A side effect of this is that personnel are physically separated from their colleagues by miles of suburbia. The coffee machine is no longer available for an impromptu gathering to talk about last week’s Soaps or Saturday’s football.
However people are imaginative, and when an problem comes calling, they can normally find a solution. If social exclusion is the problem then social networking sites are the solution for lots and lots of individuals. It comes as no shock that as Internet Business and the World Wide Web has steadily crept into many aspects of our lives, that there has also been a transformation in how we commune with each other. Letters substituted by e-mail, phone calls substituted by texts and window shopping substituted by web browsing. Perhaps morning coffee with the girls can be substituted by a session on Facebook?
Well, 400 million users will testify to the influence of social networking, as Facebook dominates the social networking scene. People who Work From Home can keep in contact with colleagues, look at photos, arrange meetings and in the main keep tabs on what is happening with other people’s lives. It doesn’t replace the physical interaction but it can fill some of the gap by the joint sharing of our recent interests. Social networking sites have become a huge Internet Business in their own right. Again technology has permitted us the means to partially conquer to workers whose Online Jobs have been pushed out to homes nationwide. In many cases Americans probably interrelate more with individuals online than with their familiar neighbours. Perhaps in 100 years time someone will have a terrific idea about us all teaming up under the same roof!! ?
